Overprotected, shielded from the rest of the world, I misunderstood the reality growing up. What's right or wrong in my head was purely based on what the elder told me. They beautifully crafted the idea of reality, their vision of reality, and tried their best to protect me from the "wrong side of the world".
I fell in love with all based-on-a-true-story forms of art immediately; it opened my eyes to a bigger world where I wouldn't had known otherwise. That art can be films, books, reality shows, music, or even paintings. What interests me most about it is its power to influence people's perspective on things just by learning from others' experience. Instead of just knowing one side of the story, films for example, give us the opportunity to explore the other side of the story to grasp a better understanding of the situation.
My most recent work is a short film called "The Secret Within", where I was inspired by my friend's story. The film is a story about a boy who is confused and doubts his decision to hurt the love of his life to seek for his inner peace. While making this film, I discovered that this is something I aspire to do in the future. The whole process just fascinates me and I learned through making this film that it takes more than just desire, so much more than just an ability to create things; it takes passion.

Hello Samantha,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your passions, and sources of inspiration! Thank you also for sharing a link to the film “The Secret Within” you directed. I was impressed by what I saw. Watching this film made me understand the line that I found most interesting in your statement:
“Instead of just knowing one side of the story, films for example, give us the opportunity to explore the other side of the story to grasp a better understanding of the situation.”
I very much share this idea and think it is why I became interested in cinema in the first place.
Do you have specific film examples in mind that are powerful enough to make us question the official version of a story?
Or, maybe even official versions of history?
I believe that we can go even further. Films don't only show another truth than the official one but they can help us in understanding how different forms of truth are produced in the media. And by understanding these processes we can better participate in the making of stories and the making of history.
Here's a very interesting article a former professor of mine wrote. It's called Politics of Truth. It's a challenging text but worthwhile to read:

I really liked what you said about "What interests me most about it is it's power to influence people's perspective on things just by learning from others' experiences." I completely agree with that. I think people can learn a lot by looking at a different persons perspective. That information that we learn from other people can be extremely valuable in our lives.
ReplyDeleteI also really liked your short film "The Secret Within." I think that it holds a really powerful meaning!
Film is an interesting form of art, how it is constantly changing and being created in so many different forms.
